Retesting After Disqualification
Anyone who has been disqualified from driving for dangerous driving or certain other offences must re-take their driving test in order to regain their licence. Drivers revert back to learner status and must start the learning process again. That is, they must:
- Apply for a provisional licence, paying the applicable fee.
- Pass the theory test.
- Pass an extended practical test.
The extended driving test lasts about 70 minutes (half an hour longer than a standard driving test), and is designed to be more demanding, testing the driver over a wide variety of roads, usually including dual carriageways. This extended test is not intended as a punishment, but as a way of ensuring that the driver is competent to return to the road.
Drivers intending to take the extended test are advised to prepare by taking suitable instruction from an approved driving instructor.
