Synchromesh

A mechanism to match the teeth on the cogs in the gearbox to ensure that they engage smoothly. Before the introduction of synchromesh technology in the 1950s, the driver had to apply the clutch twice when changing gear (termed double de-clutching) so that the gears could be matched in speed before being brought into mesh together.
