Lap Belt

A type of seat restraint provided for the middle rear passenger in some vehicles, consisting of an adjustable strap that goes over the waist. These are much less safe than a three-point seat belt as there is no over-the-shoulder webbing to restrain the torso in the event of a crash. If incorrectly placed, lap belts can cause damage to internal organs.
