Gearbox
Also known as Transmission.
A system that transmits mechanical power from the engine to the wheels. Changing gears allows the driver to keep maximum engine power applied to the wheels at all times for all conditions, from start-up to high speeds. Most gearboxes have 3 to 6 ratios or 'speeds'; the lower ratios (e.g. 1st and 2nd gears) provide the maximum torque to move the car from a standstill, whilst the higher ratios (e.g. 4th and 5th gears) allow lower engine RPM for cruising speeds.
Most cars have the choice of a manual or an automatic gearbox. A manual gearbox gives a driver more control, along with increased fuel efficiency, whilst an automatic gearbox offers an easier drive.
